NC500 best beaches: exploring Gruinard Bay
Gruinard Bay, located along Scotland’s spectacular northwest coast is great for an explore. With its pink-tinged sands, turquoise waters, and dramatic mountain backdrop, it offers stunning views all year-round. Whether you’re enjoying a peaceful walk, the golden hour glow, or exploring its hidden corners, Gruinard Bay is a must-see on any trip to the Highlands. The beach is very accessible and is dog-friendly, making it a perfect stop for families and those traveling with their four-legged companions.
Getting to Gruinard Bay
Gruinard Bay is easily accessible with a paid parking area located just off the main road (9 A832, Garve IV23 2QY). There were plenty parking spaces when we visited in late September but it could get busy at other times. It’s worth noting there are bins provided but no other facilities. Opposite the parking area, a short path leads you to a set of stairs descending to the beach.
The forest ‘path’
When the tide is high, sections of Gruinard Bay can become inaccessible by the shoreline. But there is a forest path provides an alternative route to access other parts of the beach. This winding path takes you through woodland, offering a peaceful and shaded walk with glimpses of the water through the trees. We did seem to find ourselves off the path wading through bracken so it might be worth looking it up on a map before you go as it’s not waymarked - either way it’s not a massive section so you’ll find the beach one way or another!
Best time to visit: golden hour
While Gruinard Bay is beautiful at any time of day, as sunset lovers, we think it’s magical during golden hour. There are great views from all angles and the surrounding mountains provide a great backdrop. If you’re a photographer or just a lover of stunning landscapes, this is the perfect time to experience Gruinard Bay.
Tips for Visiting
Check the tide: Plan your visit around the tide schedule to maximize access to the beach. If the tide is in, take advantage of the forest path to explore other areas.
Pack for the outdoors: Bring comfortable shoes for the forest trail, as well as layers for Scotland’s ever-changing weather.
Golden hour magic: Aim to visit during the early morning or late evening to experience the bay at its most stunning.
